The Republic of Poland has announced plans to open an embassy in Ulaanbaatar and a Consulate in Erdenet according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia. The decision to open an embassy in Ulaanbaatar was made on December 8, 2020, which came into force on January 15, 2021, beginning the preparation works.

Mongolia and Poland established diplomatic relations on April 14, 1950. In 1995, Poland temporarily closed its embassy in Ulaanbaatar due to financial difficulties. The decision to reopen the Embassy was made in 1999, however, it was taken down once again in 2009.

Zbigniew Rau, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland and Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe for 2022, paid an official visit to Mongolia. During the visit, Mongolia and Poland noted that the trade turnover between the two countries has been increasing in recent years, and agreed to conclude an intergovernmental agreement on international road transport soon.

The trade between the two countries mainly consists of wool, cashmere, textiles, food products, consumer goods, and construction materials. Mongolia’s imports account for more than 90 percent of bilateral trade.

In the early 1990s, many Mongolians traveled to Poland for trade, and some have settled in Poland to this day. As of 2020, a total of about 1,000 Mongolians (more than 50 of them are students) are working and living in Poland.
